Wa West, Ghana – The Wechiau Traditional Council has formally dissociated itself from a recent incident in which a group of youth obstructed the Member of Parliament, Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu, and District Chief Executive, Hon. Richard Wulo, from entering the Wechiau Naa’s palace. The Council, in an official statement, condemned the act as unauthorized and damaging to the reputation of all parties involved.

The statement, issued on behalf of the Paramount Chief, Wechiau Naa, by Head Prince Naa Gomah Ahmed, addresses an event that occurred on December 29, 2025. Individuals identifying as members of the "Wechiau Youth Association (WYA)" blocked the MP’s access and subsequently circulated allegations via press release and media interviews.

The Traditional Council asserted it had no prior knowledge or authorization of these actions. It further clarified that it does not recognize any formally constituted group by the name "Wechiau Youth Association," describing the group's conduct as "mere youthful exuberance" and their specific allegations as fabricated and unsubstantiated.

Key points from the Council’s statement include:

On MP’s Palace Visits: The Council refuted claims that Hon. Toobu had refused invitations. It confirmed he was invited while abroad and, upon return, apologized for the delay—an apology accepted by the chiefs. A subsequent meeting between the MP, DCE, and the chiefs was held to discuss district development.

On Conflict Resolution: The Council dismissed allegations of the MP’s inaction regarding the Kandeu–Lassia Tuolu issue. It stressed that the Wa West District remains broadly peaceful and that Hon. Toobu has initiated mediation talks at the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council under the leadership of Regional Minister Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozung.

On Prior Communication: The Council noted that these matters had already been explained to the community’s four gates and youth during a meeting on December 13, 2025, making the subsequent protests baseless.

The Wechiau Traditional Council reiterated its full confidence in the MP and DCE, emphasizing that the palace remains open to all government officials. It extended an unreserved apology to Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu and Hon. Richard Wulo for the distress caused by the incident and expressed a commitment to maintaining the long-standing cordial relationship between the traditional authority and government representatives.
