Another bus smuggling a large cache of ammunition from Accra to northern Ghana has been intercepted by police. Security personnel at the Asankare barrier in the Ashanti Region seized 1,050 rounds of ammunition concealed in a sack on a passenger bus traveling to Tamale.
The operation, confirmed by a police situational report seen by Graphic Online, occurred during a routine check at the Asankare Police barrier. Officers grew suspicious of the Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309-21, which was en route from Accra to Tamale, ultimately bound for Savulegu.
Upon notification, the Divisional Commander, Juaso District Commander, and District Crime Officer arrived at the scene and conducted an extensive search. The search revealed a sack containing the ammunition, specifically AAA and BB cartridges.
The vehicle was being driven by 42-year-old Mohammed Gzali, assisted by 22-year-old Mohammed Jabir. The bus was carrying 45 passengers at the time of the interception.
When questioned, driver Mohammed Gzali claimed the sack was delivered to the station by an unknown person as a parcel, to be delivered to an individual named Oboye in Tamale.
According to the police report, the bus was immediately impounded and the ammunition retained as evidence. The two suspects, Gzali and Jabir, are currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations.
This interception marks the latest in a series of similar incidents, highlighting ongoing concerns about the illicit flow of weapons and ammunition within the country.
