A principal suspect and gang leader linked to a series of notorious armed robberies in the Upper West Region has been arrested in a joint police operation on January 22, 2026.
Mamuda Kunja, 25 years old Fulbe by decent, was apprehended on January 20, 2026, at a known hideout in Ponyantega within the Wa West District. The operation was conducted jointly by the Regional Police Command and the Tumu Police Command.
According to a source at the Tumu Police Command, Kunja is the leader of a five-member armed robbery group terrorizing the Sissala area. He is the third member of the gang to be arrested, leaving two suspects still at large.
The remaining fugitives have been identified as Osman and Daudu Hamid. Police officials confirm that measures are actively being implemented to apprehend them.
Kunja has been formally charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery. He was arraigned before the Wa Circuit Court and has been remanded into police custody to allow for further investigations. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 3, 2026.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough for police efforts to combat a spate of armed robberies that have plagued communities in the Upper West Region.
