Government Pledges Road Projects and New Markets for Nadowli/Kaloe District Following Ministerial Engagement

Upper West Regional Minister meets traditional authorities, addresses infrastructure and economic development.

In a direct response to community appeals, the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq., has pledged urgent government action to rehabilitate dilapidated roads and construct new 24-hour economy markets in the Nadowli/Kaleo District. The commitments were made during a series of courtesy visits to the paramountcies of Charekpong, Nadowli, Takpo, and Sankana.

The Minister, accompanied by Council of State Member H.E. Mr. Michael Kwame Mumuni and NDC Upper West Regional Chairman Abdul-Nasir Saani, engaged with chiefs and elders on critical development challenges. Traditional leaders identified poor road networks as a primary obstacle, severely hindering transportation, trade, and access to social services, particularly during rainy seasons.

Hon. Puozuing assured the communities that road rehabilitation is a top priority under the government’s national Big Push infrastructure project. To provide immediate relief, the District Assembly will deploy DRIP machines for regular maintenance of feeder and access roads.

On economic development, the Minister announced plans to establish two 24-hour markets within the district. One will be located in Nadowli as a government project, while a second will be built in Sankana, funded through the initiative of the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin. These markets are designed to boost local commerce and create job opportunities.

District Chief Executive Hon. Mary Haruna pledged close collaboration with traditional authorities to ensure optimal placement of the markets. During the meetings, chiefs also emphasized the need for reliable electricity, upgraded healthcare facilities, and modernized agricultural support through irrigation and machinery.

The Paramount Chief of Sankana, Naa Pagraninge Saakoe Mornah III, commended the initiatives, highlighting peace and unity as essential for development. Residents and leaders expressed gratitude to the central government and the Speaker of Parliament for the interventions.

The engagement, facilitated by the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council, underscores the government’s strategy to partner with traditional authorities for inclusive grassroots development.
