The Parliament of Ghana has officially amended the names of three public universities, removing the prefixes honouring specific individuals to adopt what the government describes as more streamlined, descriptive titles.
The restorations, effected by legislative amendment, were made on Friday, December 19, 2025. The Simon Diedong Dombo University of Business and Integrated Development Studies (SDD-UBIDS) in Wa will now be known as the University of Business and Integrated Development Studies, Wa (UBIDS).
In line with the new amendment by parliament, the CK Tedam University of Technology and Applied Sciences (CKT-UTAS) in Navrongo is renamed the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS).
The Akenten Appiah Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) will also be called the University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development. According to the government, the primary rationale for the change is to streamline the institutions' identities.

This aligns with statements made by the Education Minister, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu in May 2025, who indicated the move to "UBIDS" was intended to align with legislative changes and present a clearer institutional focus. The restoration fulfils a campaign pledge made by President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prior to the 2024 general elections.
The promise was to revise the names given to these universities under the previous administration of President Nana Akufo-Addo, which had incorporated the names of late political and regional figures.
Meanwhile, there has been no immediate indication from the Ministry of Education regarding potential costs associated with the name changes or the timeline for implementing new signage and official materials across the affected campuses.
