A Nigerian aircraft and its crew, briefly detained in Burkina Faso over an alleged airspace violation, have been released and formally received in Ghana, following a peaceful diplomatic resolution between the involved nations.
The reception took place on Saturday, December 20, 2025, with Ghana’s President’s Special Envoy for the Sahel, Col. Larry Gbevlo Lartey, welcoming the crew on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama.
In a statement from the Presidency, Col. Lartey commended both Nigeria and Burkina Faso for resolving the matter through diplomatic channels, highlighting the incident as a demonstration of regional unity and the ability of West African neighbors to settle disputes amicably.
The aircraft crew will remain in Ghana to undergo necessary technical checks while awaiting final clearance to proceed to Portugal, where the aircraft is scheduled for servicing.
The release concludes an incident that had drawn regional diplomatic engagement, underscoring cooperative security and diplomatic ties within the ECOWAS subregion.
